Ten Commands from God

Commandment 2 · Worship God alone

When a symbol becomes a source

A student declines a pendant offered as spiritual protection.

A friend gives you a pendant before an important exam. “It is not just jewellery,” they say. “This spirit protects people who honour it. Promise it your devotion.” The design is not the issue. The claim of spiritual power and the request for worship are.

Start with what God says
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.Exodus 20:4 · King James Version · Opening verse of this commandment
Read the full commandment · Exodus 20:4–6 · KJV
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
Make your call

What are you being asked to trust?

There is a cost behind every answer. Choose one to examine it.

Where the command is violated

The line crossed

Giving worship or service to an idol.

What obedience looks like

The better decision

Refusing idol worship while respecting the person offering it.

Understand the command

Do not miss the distinction

An ordinary object or piece of art is not automatically an idol. This case turns on worship and service.

Take it into your week

Prepare before the pressure

Distinguish three things: an object’s appearance, a claim about its power, and an act of worship. Which one changes this situation?
