Commandment 3 · Honour God’s name

The clip that gets the laugh

A teen suggests a respectful change while friends edit a video.

Your friends are editing a short video. The funniest line uses God’s name as a punchline. They ask you to say it again with more attitude. You know the edit will get attention, and you also know why the words trouble you. “It is just content,” someone says.

Start with what God says
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.Exodus 20:7 · King James Version
Make your call

Does attention make the words less serious?

There is a cost behind every answer. Choose one to examine it.

Where the command is violated

The line crossed

Using God’s name carelessly to entertain an audience.

What obedience looks like

The better decision

Speaking reverently even when irreverence would win a reaction.

Understand the command

Do not miss the distinction

The standard is reverence, not whether the phrase is popular or the audience approves.

Take it into your week

Prepare before the pressure

Rewrite the line without using God’s name. Then decide how you would respond if the group refuses your edit.
